👩🏻‍🏫 In charge of your English

#003

Congratulations to many of you who got last week’s question correct!

A special mention to Maite who wrote the following:

“If we are referring to the bottle itself, whether full or empty, we say a wine bottle. If we are referring to the wine we’d say a bottle of wine.”

So, a packet of crisps (lays) is a snack to eat, while a crisp packet is something that you throw away. This is the same with a can of coke and a coke can.

You now know the difference between a cup of tea and a teacup!

This week’s 3 tips:

Something to avoid 🫣

🤦🏻‍♀️ "I am the responsible of"

You can say “I am responsible for”. (Without the)

The government is responsible for enforcing law and order.

But avoid saying “I am the responsible of this department”

Better to say…

"I am in charge of"

“I am in charge of this department,” is much better.

When using a verb, be sure to use the gerund (+ing). I am in charge of writing this email every week.

You may also hear “who is in charge?”, which is better than saying “who is the responsible?”

Who is in charge of organizing the Christmas party this year?

Something to sound confident 🧐

👔 Business jargon explained

"Pick someone’s brain"

To obtain information by asking someone who has more knowledge about the subject than oneself.

Juan, do you mind if I pick your brain a minute?

Something difficult 🤔

📰 What does the headline mean?

top tip - never buy this newspaper

  • PM - Prime Minister of Great Britain

  • Get a grip - Try to control the situation (or, in another context, your emotions)

  • Read the riot act - Get angry with someone for what they have done and warning them if it happens again there will be consequences

The Prime Minister tells the police to try and control the situation regarding anti-Israel hate. As two schools close and worries increase about protests, the Prime Minister speaks angrily to the police chiefs
