Afternoon everyone πŸ‘‹

In the corner of Barcelona, The Nou Camp, El Camp Nou, the Spotify Camp Nou is currently under construction.

I know this because I drive past it most days. There are cranes everywhere.

It got me thinking about 2 words; workforce and manpower:

  • Workforce refers to the total number of people engaged in a particular organisation. It emphasises the collective labour force contributing to the operation.

β€œThe company’s workforce includes people from different departments”

  • Manpower is a word that feels, in 2024, a little out of date. Traditionally it refers to the labour force available for work. Usually manual labour.

β€œThe factory relies on skilled manpower to operate the machinery”

So they both refer to the human part of productive activity. Workforce is perhaps a broader and more inclusive term. While manpower emphasises physical labour more.

β€œA worker provides manpower and is also part of the workforce”
