🧳 Tourists come home
#049
Hello everyone and welcome back!
By now I’m sure many of you have already enjoyed a summer break and are back to reality.
I read in an article (posted below) how fed up (harto) with tourists the residents of Catalonia are, with 48% saying, “there were too many foreign travellers in their area.”
The statistics showed that Spain had by far (con diferencia) the most negative view of tourists when compared to other large European nations.
One particular point of contention (punto de controversia/discordia) was the short-term holiday rental sector. Which is accused on inflating rents for locals.
The Spanish government is set to crackdown (reprimir) on these rentals.
The article states that controlling tourists is a difficult balancing act (acto de equilibrio) for most European countries.
I don’t offer any solutions.
This summer I was a tourist and now I am home.
We hope you all enjoyed a relaxing break
This week’s 3 tips:
SOMETHING TO AVOID 🫣
🤦🏻♀️ “I am in holiday”
“In holiday” implies being physically inside something. Like a location or place.
I was in Sri Lanka
But since “holiday” is not a physical space, it doesn’t fit.
✅ “I am on holiday”
The preposition “on” suggests participation in an activity or being in a particular state. Just like in the examples below:
They are on a trip
I can’t come because I am on duty that evening.
SOMETHING TO SOUND CONFIDENT 🧐
✍️ Words explained
“Backlash”
A strong negative reaction by a large number of people, especially to a social or political development.
The politicians were unprepared for the intensity of the public backlash
