🖋️ "I love a quote"
#059
The word quote is definitely something you should have in your English toolbox.
For example, in English, it’s common to say:
I went to the mechanic and got a quote for them to repair my car.
Spanish speakers might use the word presupuesto here and translate it as budget.
But here's the thing, in English we wouldn't use budget in this context. For us, budget refers to something like the advertising budget of a company or perhaps a family’s household budget.
When we’re talking about an estimated price, we’d say quote.
It can be also be a verb:
I was quoted a thousand euros for the repair.
But the more interesting meaning of quote is when it refers to a quotation—the exact words someone said or wrote.
Personally, I love a quote. There’s something cool about how much meaning can be conveyed in just a few words.
Not only can quotes be inspiring, but they’re also fantastic for English learners. By studying quotes, not only can you understand their meaning but also learn them to use in your own conversations.

This week’s three tips:
SOMETHING TO AVOID 🫣
🤦🏻♀️ “Depends of”
In Spanish, you’d say depende de, so it feels natural to directly translate it in this way.
✅ “Depends on”
However, in English, the correct phrase is always “depends on.”
It depends on the weather
The success of the project depends on teamwork
SOMETHING TO SOUND CONFIDENT 🧐
👔 Business expressions
“To cherry pick”
Positive Connotation: Selecting the best options or opportunities available.
The recruiter cherry-picked the most qualified candidates for the role
Negative Connotation: Selecting only specific pieces of evidence or information to support a biased argument, ignoring the full picture.
The politician was accused of cherry-picking statistics to make the policy seem successful
