🇪🇸 Hispanicised
#067
A student of ours told us that when he and his wife come back from holiday, they crave (tener ansias/antojos de) certain foods.
‘Certain foods’, in this case, being:
Un bocadillo de tortilla de patatas
Jamón
Vino tinto
I found this funny. ‘So Spanish’, I thought to myself.
But as I sit here in the airport, with the gourmet choice of a Burger King or a pho noodle soup to satisfy my hunger, I realise I might be craving ‘certain foods’ too.
A pincho de tortilla with olive-oil-drenched (empapado) pan con tomate? 🍅+🫒 Just the ticket right now.
A plate of jamón and a glass of red wine? 🐷+🍷 Now we’re talking.
And suddenly, I wake from my food reverie (ensoñación) and face a shocking truth: after living in Spain for so long I have been hispanicised—Spanish culture has sunk its teeth into me, and I am deeply accustomed to it.
I don’t think the same can be said for the gentleman in the video below. 😂
Now, excuse me while I go take the edge off my hunger (matar el gusano) with whatever sad airport snack I can find.
One thing is for sure though. Next week I am having a chuletón! 🥩

What food do you crave when you come back home?
This week’s three tips:
SOMETHING TO AVOID 🫣
🤦🏻♀️ “I’m craving for chocolate”
There is no need to say for after crave. Although if you use it as a noun, then you need to say for:
I have a craving for chocolate
She had a craving for watermelon
✅ “I’m craving chocolate”
So just state the food you desire after ‘crave.’
He’s craving a steak
SOMETHING TO SOUND CONFIDENT 🧐
👔 Business expressions
“Sweeten the deal”
To make an offer more attractive or appealing, often by adding an extra incentive. It’s like adding sugar to a recipe to make it taste better.
To close the sale, we decided to sweeten the deal by offering free shipping
SOMETHING FUNNY 🤣
Make sure you watch this. The best 16 seconds of your day.
