🍳 Vocal Fry

#069

Last week on the metro, I found myself wedged between a group of girls from the U.S.

Within seconds, I was kicking myself (regretting) for leaving my headphones at home.

The reason? Vocal Fry.

They were all speaking in that grating, creaky tone (chirriante y crepitante) that was grinding my gears (annoying me).

Not only was I crammed into the metro, inches away from an armpit, but having to endure that vocal fry really took the biscuit (Ya era el colmo)

You might be wondering: What are you on about? (de qué estás hablando?)

As the video below explains, vocal fry is a low vibration in the vocal cords that can make someone sound world-weary, disengaged, or just plain bored.

You’ve probably heard it in movies or tv shows—certain characters use it to sound indifferent or detached.

Now you know what it’s called.

Fry an egg, not your vocals.

Until next week!

This week’s three tips:

SOMETHING TO AVOID 🫣

🤦🏻‍♀️ “Never I speak like that”

“Never” can come at the beginning of a sentence in formal or literary English, but this requires inversion (changing the word order). This is not common.

Never do I speak like that

Never will he change his mind

“I never speak like that”

Adverbs like never come before the main verb but after auxiliary verbs.

They never wanted to appear unprofessional

SOMETHING TO SOUND CONFIDENT 🧐
