In Spanish, you lend attention: prestar atención.
Probably because you want it back.
In French, it’s something you make: faire attention.
Because if it’s not created, it doesn’t exist.
In German, you gift attention: Aufmerksamkeit schenken
Because it really is a present.
However in English, it’s something you pay.
Because it’s valuable.
So valuable, that you may have heard people say:
Attention is the new oil
A precious and valuable resource.
That’s why advertisers spend millions to grab your attention.
And why good communicators can hold your attention.
Most importantly, remember to give someone your full attention when you’re with them.
This is what I have to remind myself during the World Cup:
A goal can grab my attention.
A good match will hold my attention.
But my pregnant wife deserves my full attention.
Multitasking: Are you paying attention, or just getting distracted?

SOMETHING TO AVOID 🫣
🤦🏻♀️ “It called my attention”
In Spanish, you can say: “Me llamó la atención.”
✅ “It caught my attention”
Although you may be tempted to say “called”, the more natural version would be to “catch” your attention.
You could also say: “it grabbed your attention”.
One detail in the report caught my attention
SOMETHING TO SOUND CONFIDENT 🧐

“to bring something to someone’s attention”
To bring something to someone’s attention means to make someone aware of something important.
It’s a polite, professional way to say: “I want you to know about this.”
