BEFORE WE DIVE IN

New video regarding Still, Yet, Already and Anymore.

If you have any doubts then, make sure to watch.

Last night, I was watching the World Cup.

Germany had just edged past (narrowly defeated) Ivory Coast in a hard-fought 2–1 victory.

When the winning goal went in, the cameras immediately cut to the German coach.

He leapt to his feet, punched the air and shouted one unmistakable word:

“¡Vamos!”

That struck me as curious.

He’s German.

Surely there’s a more appropriate word to shout in his native tongue.

But it seems that, at least in football, vamos has become universal.

You hear it from players, coaches and fans from all over the world.

Spanish, Portuguese, German, English - it doesn’t seem to matter.

For moments of triumph, relief and pure emotion, everyone seems to understand exactly what vamos means.

In English, we might say Let’s go! or Come on! to encourage.

Or Get in! or simply Yes! when our team scores.

But none of them quite capture the same feeling.

Sometimes a word becomes so powerful that it no longer belongs to one language.

¡Vamos!

¡Come on England!

This week’s three tips:

SOMETHING TO AVOID 🫣

🤦🏻‍♀️ “The match stayed 2–1”

This is a direct translation from Spanish:

El partido quedó 2–1

But in English, scores don’t usually stay.

“The match finished 2–1”

Remember:

  • stay = remain in the same place or condition

  • finish/end = how a match concludes

You could also say:

The final score was 2–1

SOMETHING TO SOUND CONFIDENT 🧐

👔 Business expressions

“to edge past”

To move slightly ahead of someone or something, usually by a very small margin.

It is commonly used in sports, business, politics and any competitive situation where the difference between two competitors is small.

Our company edged past its main competitor in market share last quarter.

SOMETHING TO WATCH 📺

The Scottish fans drank all the beer in Boston 🤣

See if you can understand their accents
